Transactions

This new index incorporates the two previous indexes spanning the years 1856-1981, and adds articles from 1982-2006.

The new index also forms the basis for a more detailed version to include page numbers, format and author, which will accompany the digitisation of the Transactions.

Given index entries for the first time are individuals profiled in two key articles:

1921 Hawick and its people
1941 Hawick and prominent men in Victorian days

Spelling of specific names follows that featured in the original article.

Major subject headings, apart from organisations, personal and place names, reflect areas of research and include:

Archaeological Finds Ballads & Poetry
Battles Castles & Towers
Centenaries Church
Crime & Punishment Death & Burial
Dialect Education
Elections Farming
Law & Jurisdiction Monumental Inscriptions
Natural History Place NamesPlace Names
Romans Textile Industry

The index includes papers delivered or gifted to the Society since 1856. However publication only began in 1863. In the years 1885-87 and 1891 no papers were given and in 1892 publication was suspended. This resumed in 1898 and has continued to date.

Before the issue of the Transactions, and during the suspension period, the articles were printed in the local press and can be consulted in the reference section of Hawick Library. Such items are marked in the index by an asterisk. They are also available in the digitised version of the Transactions.

In addition to the titles indexed here, each edition of the Transactions includes details on the President, committee members, lectures and excursions, reports from Hawick Museum, and obituaries, together with a list of members.

I hope this new index will encourage people, not only to discover the wealth of information on Hawick’s history, but also to undertake further research and contribute new articles to future editions of the Transactions.
